The Mirror Eye premieres | 04.24.05

The Mirror Eye premieres May 5th at The Bristol Omnitheater at the MOST in Syracuse, New York. The documentary explores the relationship between internationally renowned art critic Clement Greenberg and five Syracuse artists with whom he had intimate working relationships: Stephen Achimore, Scott Bennett, Darryl Hughto, Mark Raush, and Susan Roth. The film will be screened in conjunction with the two part group exhibition "Greenberg in Syracuse: Then and Now,” featuring these five painters.

“Greenberg in Syracuse” will take place at Company Gallery, One Lincoln Center, Syracuse, NY. Curated by noted art critic Karen Wilkin, the exhibition is accompanied by a full color catalog entitled The Mirror Eye: Greenberg in Syracuse, featuring essays by art critic Karen Wilkin, art historian David Tatham, freelance writer Suzanne Shane, and will include a copy of Hughto's The Mirror Eye on DVD. The film will also be available as a stand-alone DVD, with extras including a fully restored lecture given by Greenberg in Canastota, NY.

“Greenberg In Syracuse: Then” (May 5- May 26, 2005) highlights the five painters’ innovative techniques and use of new acrylic pigments and gels in the 70s through the 80s.

“Greenberg In Syracuse: Now” (June 2- July 7, 2005) will exhibit works by these same artists as they are working today, continuing to explore and extend the potential of plastic media in the tradition of painting. In Wilkin’s words, “They belong to a seamless tradition of western painting in which anything is possible, from meticulous illusionism to radical abstraction.”

Opening night for “Greenberg In Syracuse: Then” is May 5, 5-7:30pm, at Company Gallery. The Mirror Eye premiere follows at the MOST at 8pm.

Opening night for “Greenberg In Syracuse: Now” is June 2, 5-8pm, at Company Gallery.

Company Gallery and “Greenberg In Syracuse” are productions of ThINC, The Institution of a Now Culture, Inc. The nonprofit organization’s mission is to concentrate on the health of our community by acting as a catalyst for artistic and cultural evolution that results in positive social change.
